About the Instructor - C. Sue Furman, Ph.D. - Holistic Touch Therapy

Dr. Sue Furman has had a lifetime relationship with animals and a commitment to their well-being. Her devotion to animals was cemented at age 5 when she wanted and got a dog just her size and all her own. Sue and her Chihauhau, Snooks, were best friends for 17 years. Over the years, Sue has shared her life with many other dogs. Some like Zeke, Princey and Lucky were Special Blends of mixed heritage. Others were an interesting variety of pure bred dogs including an Irish Setter (Brandy), German Shepherd (Max), Dalmatian (Tucker), Cocker Spaniel (Muffin) and a Scottish Terrier (Scooter).

Sue now shares her home and life with the Wolfchase Pack currently composed of Zoe, Gabbie, Logan, Sand, Megan, Darby, Murphy, Riley, Mellow Yellow (Irish Wolfhounds) and Hobo (Special Blend). The Pack allows Sue ample opportunity to practice canine massage. The dogs are also eager participants in her canine classes. Members of the Wolfchase pack appear in Animal Planet's Breed All About It: The Irish Wolfhound and are frequently seen in AKC conformation shows.

Sue spent 40 years teaching and conducting research involving nerve and muscle and is currently on faculty as a Visiting Professor in the Department of Physiology, College of Medicine, Southern Illinois University. She has also held faculty positions in the School of Veterinary Medicine Department of Anatomy and Neurobiology at Colorado State University, the School of Medicine Departments of Pathology and Pharmacology at the University of Maryland and in the Department of Biology at Wright State University. Through the years Sue has taught a variety of classes including comparative anatomy, anatomy & physiology, general biology, genetics and microbiology. She enjoyed teaching at all levels from freshmen in college through graduate students, veterinary medicine majors and medical students.

An expert in animal massage and acupressure, Sue also has a well-rounded background in other animal therapies. She is certified in canine and equine Healing Touch and the Bowen technique and actively practices Reiki. Sue combines her extensive scientific understanding of neuromuscular structure and function with her expertise in holistic animal care methodologies to practice and teach Holistic Touch Therapy canine, equine, and feline massage. Due to her expert status as teacher and practitioner of alternative animal healthcare methods, Sue has been interviewed and featured in Prevention Magazine, Dog Fancy, Cat Nip and Cat Fancy magazines.

An accomplished author, Sue has numerous scientific and trade articles and books to her credit. Writing for the popular press is motivated by her desire to improve the quality of life for animals. Her work has appeared in The Whole Dog Journal, Clean Run, Equine Athlete, Horse Illustrated and The Illinois Horse Network. Sue is also well known in the book-publishing arena. Her goal in writing Balance Your Dog: Canine Massage (Wolfchase Publishing, 2003) was to share techniques to balance the canine body, mind, and spirit. She also authored Turning Point: The Myths and Realities of Menopause (Oxford University Press, 1995; Japanese translation also available) and co-edited Fifth Sunday (St. Peter's Episcopal Church, 1996) and Freeze-fracture: Techniques, Artifacts, and Interpretations (Raven Press, 1979).

Sue's professional memberships include Dog Writers Association of America (DWAA), Small Publishers Association of North America (SPAN), Colorado Independent Publishers Association (CIPA), Centennial Pens and Publishers, Irish Wolfhound Club of America, Rocky Mountain Irish Wolfhound Association and the Irish Wolfhound Association of the Mid-South.
